Reflecting on My Baking Journey

Learning how to bake better and adding more baking techniques to my tool belt was a lot of fun. At the beginning of the semester, I brought in cookies to class, and it was so nice to see how sharing food can bring people together. I always appreciated the people in my life like mom, who always had homemade treats around to enjoy, and it was nice to be that person for others.

This inquiry was about baking, but it really helped me feel a bit more connected to my loved ones. Other than the cookies at the beginning of the semester, I baked with other people for the rest of the baked goods I made. This was not the initial intention, as I started out thinking that I would be learning to bake alone. This experience was a good reminder that you should reach out to those around you, and share these types of experiences with them. The wealth of knowledge from my mom and my friend Rayne was so helpful, as they showed me good baking practices and techniques, and they were there to share the experience with me. If I could go back to the beginning of the semester, I would say that I should have gone into it with the idea that it was going to be a completely collaborative experience with my community of people.

Speaking on advice for future EDCI 336 students, I would suggest bringing other people into the project if possible. It will help you feel more connected to your friends and family during the semester, as sometimes we need a reminder to reach out more – we are so disconnected these days, and this project can help with that.

I made macarons again with Rayne, and they turned out so good! I wanted to give macarons another try, so that I could really get the process down. I feel a lot more comfortable with them this time!

I hope to take my new-found skills of baking into my life, and I look forward to trying my next big hurdle…sourdough! I am borrowing a starter from my mom, the person who initiated my joy for baking 😉 I will always think of her when I bake, and I am so grateful to share this hobby with her now.

Cheers,

Rylie
